Private Ultrasound Without Referral
At The New Foscote Hospital, patients can self-refer to any of our consultants, who can then refer you for an ultrasound.
That means that you don’t need a referral from your normal doctor or GP for your ultrasound.
Consultation & Procedure Fees
A private ultrasound at The New Foscote Hospital can cost as little as £316. You will also need to have a consultation with one of our expert doctors in order to be referred for an X-Ray.
You can self-refer for a consultation with any of our expert consultants. Consultations typically cost between £150 and £250, and are available to both self-pay and insured patients.

What to Expect From The Procedure
An ultrasound is an outpatient procedure, meaning that you can simply come to the hospital for the procedure, and leave again once it’s done.

Preparing For Your Ultrasound
Depending on the type of ultrasound you need, you may be asked to prepare differently. For example, if you’re having a scan of your pelvic area, you may be asked to drink water and not go to the toilet before your scan.
If you’re having a scan of your digestive system, you may be asked not to eat or drink for several hours before the scan.

During Your Ultrasound
The ultrasound procedure will be slightly different for each different type of ultrasound, your doctor will let you know the procedure for your specific treatment before your appointment. Most appointments last between 15 and 30 minutes, and you will be able to go home after the procedure is complete.

After Your Ultrasound
After your ultrasound you’ll be able to go home, and our expert radiologists will examine the results, discuss them with your consultant, and be in touch quickly with your diagnosis and next steps.
Different Types of Ultrasound
- External Ultrasound – An external ultrasound is when the ultrasound probe is moved over your skin. This is typically used for ultrasounds of the heart and digestive system, as well as scans for muscular or joint problems.
- Internal Ultrasound – Internal ultrasound is when the ultrasound scan is done within your body. Vaginal ultrasounds help diagnose issues like fibroids, and rectal ultrasounds are used to check the health of your colon and anus.
- Endoscopic Ultrasound – An endoscopic ultrasound is often used to take scans of your digestive system. A small tube is inserted into your throat, and the ultrasound probe moves down the tube into your stomach to produce images of your system.
- Guided Ultrasound – As well as diagnostic ultrasound, The New Foscote Hospital also provides guided ultrasound – which is where ultrasound is used as part of your treatment. This includes treatments such as guided injections for pain relief.
