Dr D’Costa qualified from the University of Dundee in 1986. He initially focused on surgery, becoming a Senior House Officer and Registrar in Dundee, where he saw how important radiology was within medicine.
This led to specialist training, icluding a travelling fellowship in Paris attached to Professor Lauren Palazzo, a leading gastroenterologist. in 1997, Dr D’Costa entered the GMC’s specialist list as a clinical radiologist.
A consultancy post in Oxford followed, carrying out a wide range of radiological scans. Dr D’Costa’s knowledge of gastroenterology is however an important part of his work, which brings value to colleagues and patients.
A case report in the British Medical Journal highlights how good gastrointestinal radiology can help. Where a patient developed perforation of the oesophagus after eating fish, complicated by perforation of the aorta shortly afterwards.
Many similar issues are known and often prove fatal. In this case, although the patient was not aware of swallowing a bone, issues this caused were found using contrast computed tomography and successful surgery carried out.
Being able to see what is happening inside our bodies is a key part of medicine. Always provided by Dr D’Costa in an informed, patient friendly way.
Research & Teaching
Dr D’Costa has published a number of leading papers on gastrointestinal radiology. He was Postgraduate District Tutor for the Oxford Deanery and helped to introduce a foundation training programme in Oxford.
He is the lead for the Oxford bowel cancer screening programme and Professional Clinical Advisor on Radiology for a national bowel cancer screening programme.
